A House Divided Cannot Stand

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath”. But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
John 9:16.

How often are we divided about what God accomplishes through the many men and women of God of His Kingdom? We hear of amazing testimonies, amazing miracles, yet our hearts are divided and skeptical.

I think we too like the Pharisees of Jesus’s day too religious to understand the ways of God. We are steeped in our religiosity that we miss God when He performs His wondrous works. Just like the Pharisees who did not approve of Jesus healing a man on the Sabbath. We too roll our eyes, mock in disdain and are divided about the work of the Holy Spirit.

Though they did not realise it, Jesus is God. Who is man that we should dictate to God when He should perform His miracles or how, or through whom? Their eyes and hearts were so calloused and cold, blind and closed to God. They knew the Word of God, word to word, but when the Word which had become flesh stood right before them, they were unable to see. They were blind. How sad a day it would be, if we too were blind to the work of the Spirit in our own lives.

We too who are used to doing faith “our way” because this is the way “our church” does it, or we refuse to become open to the working and the direction of the Holy Spirit in our faith walk, that we become stunted in our spiritual growth, or we get stuck in “this is the way we have always done it” and completely miss out on the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit in our asking and in our receiving. We create these boxes and expect the Holy Spirit to work within them, limiting Him to our limitations and inadequacies.

Are there no answers to your prayers?
Are there no miracles and the impossible in your life?
Are your testimonies dull and dry?

Perhaps your expectation of God is limited to your terms or your disbelief. Are you divided in what you read in the Bible? Do you believe the God Who parted the sea, can still perform the impossible for you in your life?

Jesus says, all we need is faith, the size of a mustard seed to move our mountains. Don’t you want God to do the impossible when we are faced with our Goliaths? I do. That’s the God I believe in, the God Who accomplishes the impossible. I don’t want to be divided between what I read and what I expect from God. I know He is the same God, yesterday, today and always. A house divided cannot stand. We are one body. Imagine the change we could bring into our communities and neighborhoods, and families and lives, if we prayed like we believed in what we asked for.

This is what the Word of God says:
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others.

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

But he must ask in faith, without doubting, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

Do you believe? Or do you doubt?

Lord help us in our unbelief, help us remember You are the God Who saves, changes, impacts, moves mountains, raises the dead – as in the past and to this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
